A very merry Halloween! [Mingle]
Date: 31st of October
Characters: Open!
Warning: Non-sexual desecration of formerly buried corpses
On the morning of Halloween, when people first step out of their houses, they will almost step into something.
A bucket of water. Every flat and every house in the Mossgate Boundary has a bucket placed in front of its entrance door (and sometimes, especially in Folkton and Moss Manor, the back door too), in which scary apples are floating. A little sign taped to the bucket reads: Have fun bobbing!.
But that's not the only thing that happened. The second thing that people will notice is that there are billions of spiders of all sizes crawling all over the town and villages, the military base, the Manor House... everywhere. And they certainly did their job - trees, lanterns, the higher attractions on the pier, and everything else that is high all over Mossgate Council is covered in thick layers of cobweb.
And lastly... those who pass by a church will notice something about the graveyards around them. Namely, that someone placed skeletons on top of most of the graves... Awfully real looking ones. Really, really awfully real looking ones. To some of them, the soil of the graveyard still clings, and the graves underneath them are in a state that betrays that they were dug up during the night. DNA tests would show that, indeed, the skeletons belong to the individuals buried in the graves.

And then a second one, because more leverage might be useful in this situation.
"I think I hear someone," he says, sudden, muscles tense. It may be a false alarm, they may not be coming in, but nearby is risky enough, isn't it?

Barely on his feet when Walter alerts him to the possible presence of another person, he strains to listen himself as he weighs their options. Walter could certainly get out of the area in a hurry if necessary were he not limited by the teenager. One person is harder to spot than two together.
Voice lowered to a whisper, he replies, "Think you can help me to the trees? I can hide there."
no subject
"On it," he whispers - the only downside to running, however, is that there are leaves on the ground, and those will certainly make noise.
So it's 'slow but stealthy' for the two of them.

The strain on his friend is picked up by the teenager as they start to walk back towards the trees through the stiffness of his steps, so he shifts his weight back to his own legs as much as he can stand to lighten the burden. A couple times, a knee buckles before catching midway downward, and Benjiro forces himself to stay up until they reach the cover of the tree line. Breathing harder from the effort and trembling worse, he reaches out for tree further back that has a lower branch he can loop his arm over to hold then transfers to lean against the tree rather than Walter.
"...I-I'll be okay here."
no subject
Sure, he knows Ben can take care of himself - ordinarily.
But this isn't ordinary, and the effort it takes to even get to the trees doesn't quell Walter's worries any.
"Our most basic options are - we call for help,"
Text, most likely. Probably Mary Ann.
"Or I stay by you until we're both sure you can walk home."
no subject
Worst case scenario he can be caught and Walter can slip away unseen without the teenager slowing him down.
Given the two options, he does not have to think about his preference, “If you can wait with me about ten minutes I might be okay. I feel like I’ve been treading water for hours...”
No plausible Echo to come to Walter's rescue here, sadly.,
Something in him hurts when Ben makes that simile, and he leans on the tree as well, aiming to steady the teen.
"We can lower you down so you're sitting, would that help?"
That he is willing to stay with Ben is enough <3
Prior to making any effort to remove himself from the branch, Benjiro glances downward. He sees no signs of vines or possible culprits of irritation growing at the base, even in the fading light and shadow. Furthermore, he checks for signs that the person Walter noticed has not gotten close to them by listening and looking for any artificial light moving nearby. Satisfied they have a little more space and time, he summons what strength he retains to bring one arm from over the branch followed by the other to stand. Muscles quivering, he waits for Walter to give him some cue before he pushes his back against the tree to slide down carefully as he can manage - dropping the final quarter meter down. Despite a slight cringe, he settles quickly to lean entirely against the bark of the tree.
"Can you tell how long until they pass by us?"
no subject
"Cross that bridge when we come to it."
Really, given all the little factors going into even just moving this much, one could be forgiven for thinking something was on their side...
Walter doesn't lend that thought any credence, though; it's a slippery slope, and things are worrying enough as-is.
That cue comes as a subtle thumbs-up, made without moving the hand upward and relying only on hand motions and nodding rather than anything else in the arm.
They end up wincing practically in-sync.
"Yes. Hasn't happened yet, though."

Seated on the ground, Benjiro lays his hands on his lap with head tipped back to keep it in place as he makes a conscious effort to relax his muscles. Eyes half closed as he looks to his friend, he replies, "Okay... Don't hesitate to move if you need to."
He waits in silence, trying not to allow himself to tense as he suppresses his nerves and instead sifts through the hours of the new memory.
What was that horrid thing that attacked the brothers?
no subject
"Just keep breathing, okay? Stay with me, here."
no subject
A light becomes visible through the trees as the unknown person moves closer to their position, and Benjiro focuses on slowing his breathing to fall entirely silent.
no subject
He'll let the silence fall back in, then, confident Ben will be, if not okay, then stable for now and the near future.
The stranger(?)'s approach comes as Walter quiets himself in turn... one could say he's had his own share of practice at being unnoticeable.
With any luck, this person is also trespassing, and if they pick a fight Walter or Ben can negotiate.

Benjiro sighs out in relief only after the footsteps grow more distant. They have to stay quiet, but there should be no reason to continue impersonating statues. Tilting his head to look to Walter without yet lifting it from the support of the tree, he speaks, "It should be safe for a few minutes while I rest. Then after I might be able to make it to the house."
no subject
"Sounds like a plan."
Walter's plan is to make sure Ben gets there, then.
no subject
Gingerly, Benjiro starts to move again, limiting it to one joint at a time as he tries to coax his muscles to fire in a smooth, slow and alternating manner beginning in his legs at his ankles.
no subject
He's had practice keeping his bike's noise to a minimum, or he'd have dismissed the option out of hand.
Glancing carefully one last time as Ben starts stretching, he eases himself up and picks his way back out among the fallen leaves.
no subject
Calf muscles in better control, he moves to the knees and oh, that hurts. It requires shifting in the hips and stability in the trunk to manage, but he does it albeit more slowly. After those? Elbows followed by shoulders. Then, he simply rests with his eyes closing.
no subject
"Didn't fall asleep, did you?" Walter hazards joking.
"Come on, let's get you out of here."
no subject
Walter provides the impetus to get Benjiro to start using his body once more after the brief period of stretching and resting. Slowly, he lifts his head from the tree and leans away from the tree off to one side. Bracing with an arm, he maneuvers one knee up to get that foot flat, then reaches to plant an elbow and hand alike on the tree to prepare to stand with Walter spotting him.
No longer hushing his voice consciously, his voice still comes out quieter than usual, “Sorry for the trouble, Walter.”
Then, with as much effort as he can muster, he climbs to his feet with weight divide between the tree, his own legs, and his friend. Once able to get his knees straight, he leans to the tree rather than Walter to steady with a cringe.
FTR, it not being his fault is about not knowing what Echo he was going to get.
"No need. I'm not feeling sorry about helping you - the thing with the skeleton, it wasn't your fault."
That goes for whatever memory Ben's picked up, too. He keeps up the support throughout the struggle for standing.
"It is unfair how it got sprung on you, though. Guess that means something doesn't want us in the graveyards."
Something, not someone. Just a little bit of distance.
I know it, he knows it, but he still has to apologize cause Ben
"Well that's rude. Decorating then not even wanting us to admire the work," he cracks sardonically.
Delaying his departure from the support of the tree until he feels steady, he decides to impart the odd confirmation the second memory gave him, "At least now I'm certain I have memories from two different individuals. Donnie...Donatello. That's the name of the second one. Both of the memories seem to be from the same time period in the future. Flying vehicles common between them."
Beeen. ;; Relatable though, tbh.
Even with speed on his side, there was still something about the atmosphere that he normally tried to avoid.
The joke gets its intended smile, though the topic change gets a quiet, deliberate exhale from Walter.
"Would that mean one individual had the other's memories, or that it's just possible to get memories from more than one person to begin with?"
And then an implication hits him.
"Does the other individual... not have a name? Or have they just never been called one in what you've recalled so far?"
For real
When Walter poses a second question, Benjiro stops to think back carefully through the memories he possesses from the taller one, "...no, I don't think he has one. I don't think any of those creatures do. I remember he addressed the leader using a borrowed nickname, for lack of something else to call him."
Slowly, he peels himself from the support of the tree to begin taking ginger steps, pace slow and stride shortened significantly.
no subject
"And fought?" he asks, catching on to the tone in 'met'.
"That... that sounds terrible." Since it seems more like they were never given one, rather than them just not picking any for themselves.
"To have all that identity, but none of it yours. Nothing you can think of as your own, anyway."
Any parallels to their own situation do not get swept aside, as he eases Ben over to the bike.
