A very merry Halloween! [Mingle]

Date: 31st of October
Characters: Open!
Warning: Non-sexual desecration of formerly buried corpses

On the morning of Halloween, when people first step out of their houses, they will almost step into something.

A bucket of water. Every flat and every house in the Mossgate Boundary has a bucket placed in front of its entrance door (and sometimes, especially in Folkton and Moss Manor, the back door too), in which scary apples are floating. A little sign taped to the bucket reads: Have fun bobbing!.

But that's not the only thing that happened. The second thing that people will notice is that there are billions of spiders of all sizes crawling all over the town and villages, the military base, the Manor House... everywhere. And they certainly did their job - trees, lanterns, the higher attractions on the pier, and everything else that is high all over Mossgate Council is covered in thick layers of cobweb.

And lastly... those who pass by a church will notice something about the graveyards around them. Namely, that someone placed skeletons on top of most of the graves... Awfully real looking ones. Really, really awfully real looking ones. To some of them, the soil of the graveyard still clings, and the graves underneath them are in a state that betrays that they were dug up during the night. DNA tests would show that, indeed, the skeletons belong to the individuals buried in the graves.

FTR, it not being his fault is about not knowing what Echo he was going to get.

Walter huffs lightly.

"No need. I'm not feeling sorry about helping you - the thing with the skeleton, it wasn't your fault."

That goes for whatever memory Ben's picked up, too. He keeps up the support throughout the struggle for standing.

"It is unfair how it got sprung on you, though. Guess that means something doesn't want us in the graveyards."

Something, not someone. Just a little bit of distance.

I know it, he knows it, but he still has to apologize cause Ben

"I'm grateful that you did... Had I tried this on my own I'd have been spotted for sure," he speculates with a clear discomfort at the notion. One memory from a skeleton was one thing, but to be hit with a new, extensive memory and whatever physical change had caused so much pain and soreness is beyond expectations of a single stimulus. He had experienced a dual Echo previously, but not consecutive Echoes...

"Well that's rude. Decorating then not even wanting us to admire the work," he cracks sardonically.

Delaying his departure from the support of the tree until he feels steady, he decides to impart the odd confirmation the second memory gave him, "At least now I'm certain I have memories from two different individuals. Donnie...Donatello. That's the name of the second one. Both of the memories seem to be from the same time period in the future. Flying vehicles common between them."

Beeen. ;; Relatable though, tbh.

"Truth be told, I wouldn't have wanted to do this by myself either."

Even with speed on his side, there was still something about the atmosphere that he normally tried to avoid.

The joke gets its intended smile, though the topic change gets a quiet, deliberate exhale from Walter.

"Would that mean one individual had the other's memories, or that it's just possible to get memories from more than one person to begin with?"

And then an implication hits him.

"Does the other individual... not have a name? Or have they just never been called one in what you've recalled so far?"

For real

Ben faintly shakes his head at the two potential explanations for the dual memories, "I don't have enough memories from the first to be certain either way, but they have met in person." Not under good circumstances either as indicated by the mild strain he puts on the word 'met' to match a brief, cringing frown.

When Walter poses a second question, Benjiro stops to think back carefully through the memories he possesses from the taller one, "...no, I don't think he has one. I don't think any of those creatures do. I remember he addressed the leader using a borrowed nickname, for lack of something else to call him."

Slowly, he peels himself from the support of the tree to begin taking ginger steps, pace slow and stride shortened significantly.

Walter considers that, frown settling back in on his face.

"And fought?" he asks, catching on to the tone in 'met'.

"That... that sounds terrible." Since it seems more like they were never given one, rather than them just not picking any for themselves.

"To have all that identity, but none of it yours. Nothing you can think of as your own, anyway."

Any parallels to their own situation do not get swept aside, as he eases Ben over to the bike.

“There’s a high probability…” he admits without having a memory of a fight between them.

Placing as little weight on Walter as possible as they head to the alley, he hums in a low pitch to acknowledge that the astute deduction is correct. Simply existing was abhorrent to him.

Rather than allowing the conversation to stall there, he shifts the focus to other matters as they exit the trees and head down the alley to the bike, “Russell will enjoy one thing about this particular memory... Aliens were a significant portion of the city’s population with a surprisingly wide variety. Even had a group called the ‘Alien Earth Appreciation Society’ hosting a local movie night…” he remarks with a drained smile.

One particular alien was attacking the turtle brothers later in the memory but most were peaceful citizens.

Walter embraces the topic change, not in the least for Ben's own sake; the fact he can keep talking has good implications for his stamina.

"Didn't get to see what movies they'd picked, did you?"

Once they're at the bike, Walter insists on helping ensure Ben balances.

"I can push you, but if we still don't want to draw attention, I'll have to hold back."

Different kind of problem from if they'd been caught in the graveyard, but still a problem.

“The movie marathon was interrupted midway through, so he only got to see the majority of one of them. I still recall him reading off the titles from the promotion of the event. It included ‘The Tangler’, ‘The Thing That Ate Ice Station Zulu’, and ‘Nightmare in East Williston’. Apparently, ‘The Tangler’ was as much of a classic there as ‘Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde’, which was mentioned in a familiar list of popular monster movies.” At least some things between worlds are constant.

Arriving at the bike, Benjiro follows lead from Walter to make use of it. Rather than trying to swing a leg up and over, he carefully steps around the back tire and up over the bike seat. Thankfully, Walter being so much shorter than him lends to a lower bike seat so he can manage it. Easing to sit with his feet kept on the pavement to balance the support, he shakes his head at the offer, “You shouldn’t risk it. I can walk it, I’ll just be slow.” Walter can assist regardless to help get the speed above a lumbering walk so Benjiro can walk as much as he rides momentum.

Mmm... Thread fade?

[personal profile] iamnotgod 2018-12-10 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"Seriously?"

While there are several films going by that name here on Earth, somehow Walter can't imagine them being any culture's classic.

For once, he's glad he's short, given it makes things simpler for Ben.

"All right," he allows - and keeps his assistance subtle.

Sounds good

“That’s what survived to the year 2105,” he says with a mild shrug of his shoulders. Chad was one character he can remember the name of as the company of the female protagonist in the black and white film.

Grateful for the assistance, Benjiro makes the trek home with the bike carrying the majority of his weight and his friend keeping his mind off the pain of moving.
