So

I don't know how to start this. It's so ridiculous. [She runs a hand through her hair and then continues.]

All right. A few days ago, I felt an echo happening but I have not yet figured out what it is. And since I'm worried that this ...other person was a werewolf, and the full moon is close... [She'll let people draw their own conclusions.] Point being, I'll spend the onset of the full moon in the basement and I hope that that will be all that there'll be to it and I I'll be wrong and nothing will happen, but in case that there is... I don't want Janice to be alone in the house with the kids.

So what I'm trying to ask, would someone here stay over at my place on the 9th and all the way up to after midnight on the 10th? [Sit out the beginning and height of the full moon - if nothing has happened by the time it starts waning, she should be fine.] You can stay in Feste's room, they's currently away on a trip and have offered, and there's wifi and everything. [She might be joking now, trying to lighten the mood.] Free lodging and delicious dinner and breakfast included.

Any takers?

2. After midnight on the 10/11th, Action

She's been watching the clock with anxious, careful ...triumph, really, all the way up after they ticked into the spot at which she knows the moon to start waning.

Only then does she allow herself to relax and climb the ladder that leads up from the hole-in-the-ground basement under the living room, knocking against the latch that connects the two rooms. She can't open it herself with the heavy dresser that has (for good reason) be placed over the latch.

Hopefully whoever is watching hasn't fallen asleep on the sofa. She'd really rather spend the rest of the night in her own bed.

3. January 15th, Action, locked to people in her house

Something that Nel said a long time ago still sticks with her. Have you TRIED turning? You could be the kind of werewolf that doesn't react to the full moon....

She's been unable to stop thinking about it, and so early on Sunday, while everyone in the house is still asleep, she goes down into the living room, only dressed in her nightgown, and focuses. Ever since the trips to the tunnels she has been able to make herself hear and smell better than normal, so perhaps if she just pushes that principle even further...

Others who live in the house might hear a ripping of fabric, and when they come downstairs find a lean, grey wolf with a few black stripes running through her fur trying to get out of Mary Ann's nightgown. It's kind of stuck to the front legs and around the neck, though.

4. January 15th, Network/Video

It's still early morning, and nobody is really up, so Mary Ann decides that the best thing that she can do is go on a run while she tries to figure out how to reverse the effect.

Eventually, she stops at a lake and taps her number into the surface. ...She has no idea how to actually communicate in this form, though, so all people will see is a lean, grey wolf with a few black stripes running through her fur, sitting in a forested area.

It's been a bit over two weeks since the Numbered found the giant dormouse, and... nothing has happened. Everything's been quiet.

Until in the early morning hours of the 20th, every Numbered will find their doorbell ringing. Outside is either Mr Helpful or Mr Neutral, informing them that Mr Evil is making a move. When questioned, they say that they do not know what it is, but there is a lot of activity out at the sea forts and something seems to be moving in the ocean. Something bigger than normal.

About an hour later, at sunrise, a large wave hits the shore, and then minutes later a giant shark wearing the exact same uniform as Mr Evil (well, with the necessary adjustments to make it fit a shark) rises from the sea not too far away from the sea forts. It jumps up into the air, and it's just as well that high tide was an hour ago and not right now, and it wasn't very high to begin with today, because that makes a rather large wave crash against the beach. Not a tsunami, but it's big.

The shark then proceeds to head for the mouth of the river, and tips up, tail in the air head down. The water in the area quickly gets much, much muddier than normal, and the observer might come to the conclusion that the giant beast is digging.

While Ben goes on an adventure, the mice comply with Walter's request and seek out all the Numbered, wherever they are at the moment, to lead them to an exit - which happens to come out at the highest point that they could have made the Numbered climb. Exercise is good for you?

Either way, the Numbered step out of a tunnel that is just big enough for an adult to find themselves behind a bush up at the ruins that sit on top of the Greens. Luckily, nobody is around as they step out in whatever groups that they found themselves in last.

And then the mice return into the tunnels and leave the Numbered to themselves.

...and as the Numbered who were down in the tunnels step out into the ruins, and a mouse squeaks good-bye at them, they'll receive an echo that makes them, or used to make their preincarnation, feel safe.

I.

It's midday when trouble seems to brew underfoot. Literally underfoot, in cases - wherever the Numbered are, they'll suddenly find dormice approaching them, running around their feet, in some cases up their legs, aiming to get their attention, and then running off - coming back again, running off once more in the same direction.

Trying to get the Numbered to FOLLOW.

II.

If Numbered decide to follow the mice, they'll be lead through the streets, fields, or whatever there is (in some cases, this might mean that the mice are trying to lead them through the military area aroudn the air base). Perhaps they'll run into other Numbered on the way - all mice seem to be leading those that they lead into the exact same direction.

III.

The direction of, it turns out, the tunnels under the cliffs. The mice will easily slip through the grates that bar the entries - the grates were made to keep humans out and let a tiny mice through easily. The Numbered, however... well, the grates were installed solid and sturdy to keep humans out. The mice will vanish in the tunnels and not come back.

Network: Open Invitation (Mostly)

[In the late hours of the 26th, around 9pm, an emoji-filled text message goes up courtesy of Russell typing his number into his phone again.]

I've decided we're having a party at the flat
If you can read this and your a friend
Or a friend of a friend
You're invited to celebrate the new year and decade

...if your name has 'evil' in it you're not invited

The rest of you! Come party!! πŸŽ‰βŒ›πŸŽ‰

[There's more celebratory emoji at the end, starting with party poppers and confetti in place of a string of exclamation points, followed by various crossed-circle Nos and radioactive signs and villainous faces to emphasize his other point. Just in case an alien got this and chose to pretend he couldn't read it.]

Mingle: Quite A Normal Party

It all started as a normal, relaxing party idea. Russell's Christmas holidays turned out a little bit stressful, thanks to multiple visits to family where people expressed concern for him. Was money tight, some asked, was his new job not paying enough? Were the doctors sure he was in good health, others whispered in private asides? Well, just have another portion then, someone insisted at every house, and stay over for a big breakfast tomorrow. Reassuring family monopolized the three days, and come the night of the 26th he returned to the flat with every intention of not leaving for a week... but maybe, he mentioned to Walter, having friends visit instead.

So when Walter and Russell had the idea, and Russell posted to the network with a mostly-open invitation, they planned on a "normal" night of it; streaming normal movies, eating normal popcorn, trying to put the insanity of mice and sharks and everything else out of mind. Maybe that plan lasted for most of the days before New Year's Eve, or maybe it fell apart during the network chatter. Whenever it ended, it ended with Russell having second thoughts about the appeal of normalcy

After all, he might have said on the network but definitely said aloud, pacing up and down the hallway of the flat, talking whether he had an audience or not... they were none of them normal, and by now willingly so. After all, he emphasized, if any of them really couldn't bear what was happening, they could move! Some already had! Those still here, whether they admitted it or not, were accepting the strangeness. Choosing it. They might as well come out and say fuck it, we're strange, at least with each other.

(It isn't that simple for everyone, of course, between family obligations and financial limitations. But Russell has his biases.)

In the spirit of embracing it, by the time of the planned party, there's decorations all over the living room, kitchen, and washroom. Streamers and balloons of greens and yellows, grays and blacks, with cartoonish UFOs and aliens all over the place. An aesthetic like this all over. Some of them even say Happy Birthday, because in a manner of speaking it's a birthday for the planet, right? Or at least the calendar.

There's a decent spread of food between some home-cooked things and mostly some store-bought party platters, plus one plate meant more for the canine variety of people. And there's a Russell loitering around near the entrance, quick to open it and greet anyone who comes to visit - maybe even before they knock? (Walter may be giving him a head's up when people are coming).

[If your characters stop by the party, feel free to write top-levels for mingling with each other - this is meant as an open post for everyone! (Except Mr. Evil)]

Starting on the 5th and until the end of October, the Numbered are being watched. By sharks. Very tiny sharks.

Those sharks pop up in every water surface that has a connection to a larger water network (in other words, they will primarily pop up in people's loos, but the tiniest ones of them will also flush out of taps when they're turn on, or even out of showerheads...).

But never fear, it's not a widespread issue: It only happens in houses and other places that Numbered live, study and work in - anywhere that they are very often, a shark might pop up.

Denkifest, a biannual anime con taking over half the Mossgate university's campus, is happening. It's one of the oldest cons in Britain and has extensive lore - the first year it happened, there was a severe powercut that left the con without electricity for almost a day, and as a result it was renamed Denkicon the next year, including a reimagining of the mascots that are now a grumpy female thunder god and a hyper male lightening god. There is a minute of silence to appease the gods of electricity in every opening ceremony, where all lights in the room are switched off and 'denki-kami' is being chanted. People love to bring thunder/lightning/electricity related cosplays.

The con opens its gates on Thursday afternoon, though events don't start until Friday and the dealer's room and bring and buy don't open before Friday noon, either. The closing ceremony is Sunday noon and the cosplay ball Sunday night. Most attendees stay in the student dorms on campus, though there's always more than those can hold so some stay in the town. It's a perfectly normal con.

And if there's incredibly lifelike Capsmon characters hopping around the area and hiding when you try and get to close? Well, surely those are just really good animatronics or something. They seem to hover for a moment longer if people have their phone in hand when they approach, but they still don't want anyone to get too close. Strangely enough nobody seems to want to take credit for them, but all in all there's nothing strange here for an anime con.

Because of the university campus's location, people from the con love to wander down into the town in their off time, and many townspeople wander into the campus to see all the cosplayers hanging around, visit the open-to-the-public dealer's room, and eat at the Japanese food market that pops up on the central outside square, powered by various companies, charities, student organizations and private people from the wider area bringing in stalls. There's bubble tea, Japanese cake and taiyaki, there's takoyaki and ramen, and so on.

Date: Friday, the 2nd of August - officially Saturday, the 10th (and unofficially Sunday, the 11th)
Characters: Open to all!

It is Mossgate's fifth season, and the the first signs come when the flag above the town hall showing the town coat of arms is removed and replaced with the bright and beautiful pride flag. Anticipation is high in the LGBT+ areas of town, and the traditional pride pre-parties take place in the LGBT+ venues on Friday and Saturday nights. Bunting starts to go up along the main streets of town, and volunteers are gathered for meetings and rehearsals. Any latecomers who still wish to volunteer are invited to turn up and make themselves known at this point (especially anyone with a valid first aid certificate!)

Pride officially opens on Sunday, with special free walking tours of the notable LGBT+ venues and sights around town twice a day, as well as open lectures at the universities featuring such topics as β€œWhat is a definition anyway: LGBT identities throughout the times” and β€œ50 years and going strong: An overview of the situation of Pride parades worldwide”. Interested parties can sign up online using the local theatre's website, where they will also be able to browse the special LGBT+ program for the week (which, unfortunately, is not free, but those volunteering at any point over the week will be provided with two free tickets as one of their perks – either to be used alone for two events, or with a companion for one). The twice monthly LGBT+ book club is holding a special taster event on Wednesday evening, and the comic store is also holding special events each evening, focusing on a different LGBT+ character or author each night. Some of the religious institutions in the town are holding special LGBT affirmative services, and some are also holding drop in sessions. The RSPCA holds a pride themed dog show. Certain beauty stores, hair salons and barbers are holding trans-friendly sessions and workshops, some outside of normal working hours (although some are only accessible by signing up in advance). During the evening, there will be LGBT+ pub quizzes and special LGBT+ events up and down the high street. And, of course, plenty of other stores will also be taking advantage of the pink pound and the locals will notice the sudden influx of rainbow products, especially in the touristy shops along the beach front.

Something else starts showing up on Sunday and will be found around town the entire week of Pride: Parcels of various shapes, sizes and colours, some packaged like a present, some like regular postal items, some in entirely different ways. They just sit around in places where curious fingers might prod them, annoyed people might move them, or people might pick them up with the rest of the delivery unthinkigly. Essentially, they can be found anywhere, inside and out. They only have one thing in common: When touched, they explode into a cloud of glitter. And the glitter gets everywhere within a fifty metre radius if nothing (like a wall) stops it. The glitter bombs sitting around and waiting to explode seem to get neither less nor more. Those who can recognize Mr Neutral's scent will find it on the packages.

The other thing starts slowly and almost imperceptibly. All around town, things that break the light like thick glass, mirrors, sprayed water, and so on, will grow more likely to show a rainbow. Short rain showers will almost invariably leave one. All of this is still very natural until Thursday, when the strong, lingering, beautiful rainbow left after a rain shower portrays the colours light blue - baby pink - white - baby pink - light blue. By the time the main event rolls around, there is a ridiculous number of rainbows of all Pride flag colours everywhere, and the sky carries multiple rainbows of various identities' colours at the same time.

The main event, of course, being the pride parade, held from 11AM on Saturday the 10th. It starts at the town hall, progresses along the main beach front road and ends up at the Green from around 2PM. It's a massive event, equal to Brighton or Manchester, with plenty of floats and sponsors. All along the parade route, flags, bunting and ribbons float in the sea breeze and barriers have been placed to keep the audience from getting under the feet of the walkers, dancers, prancers and stompers that will make up a part of the parade's diverse make-up. The parade itself is made up of an interesting mix of local businesses and big name sponsors; the local walking society walking behind Absolut vodka, the WI walking ahead of Skittles, and the local scouts being proceeded by Stonewall and followed by the Conservative Party.

The Green has once again been set up with stalls for sponsors and local businesses, including charities like the RSPCA and the Samaritans. Those out for freebies won't be disappointed, with stickers, badges and sweets being handed out left, right and centre, especially by the representations of political parties who are doing their best to build some trust back up with the population. Because every Tory representative called out for increasingly ridiculous reasons, Mary Saunders had to take the Tory stand into her own hands and is brightly chatting with people about everything that is not national politics. The local reproductive health centre also has a stand, handing out condoms, dental dams, and advice.

A dance area and a DJ have been set up around the bandstand, and with several bars having build temporary extensions, the party will go on well into the night, although the parade officially ends at nightfall, when there is a fireworks display. After the fireworks, the Green is temporary cleared, and after it reopens, only those with ID proving themselves to be 18 are allowed back inside. There is, however, an alternative, alcohol free party held in the town hall for any ages.

Pride officially concludes on Sunday evening with the Kings and Queens ball, an extension by tradition that is held in the Hive. With the bar cleared out to make a second dance floor, there is a flamboyant tie dress code, (as long as it's smart and fabulous, you'll be welcomed), and while tickets generally sell out months in advance, Alexander keeps a few to one side for late comers, and volunteers are (again) provided with two as part of their package. When the bell finally tolls at 2AM, and the last partygoers are sent home, Mossgate will return to it's usual, quiet self (but the glitter will take some time to clean up completely).

Beginning in mid-July, the riverside archaeology dig opens to the public. The Mossgate community is invited to come by and join the dig, taking on little plots to excavate - with instruction and supervision by those more experienced.

School groups and family days encourage children to come join in and learn something of history, maybe chancing to dig up old coins or stray bits of pottery. People attending university nearby might recognize Jane Astbury, head of the university and member of the archaeology department, but she doesn't stay to talk.

But most people are talking enough to make up for it. It's an exciting, slightly peculiar find. Stone age hillforts aren't unusual, but this one seems so close to the river that some of the ruins are likely in the river. A few theories go around - maybe the river was smaller back then, maybe the fort was designed in such a way to divert the river's flow, maybe the river once flowed in a different location altogether.

They don't have answers yet, but with your help they might unearth the truth here.

The weather is beautiful, approaching twenty and mostly sunny, and it's just perfect for the literature festival that takes part in Mossgate every year. A full week - or rather, 8 days - fully packed of all kinds of literary activities and events awaits.

It starts on Sunday with festivities on the Greens that involve all kinds of local groups putting things on the stage set up near the bandstand - choirs, orchestras, theatre groups, dance groups, and more, both professional and high quality amateur productions. Food stalls are littered around the area, and various booths sell, inform about, or simply exhibit various literature related things. There's also a storytelling tent set up near the ruins catering to children during the day and to adults in the evening and half through the night.

Then all throughout the week there are all kinds of things offerend around Mossgate council. Local artists of all walks, ranging from paper artists to dollmakers, from painters to theatre groups and from singers to circus troupes have been offered all kinds of unusual places to bring literature to new backgrounds. There might be a Shakespearean play on the ruins, or an art exhibition on the pleasure pier, a concert in the zoo or a storytime in the Mayor's office (for all the little ones).

There are also Drag Queen Story Hours at the library, bars and pubs and bookstore offer readings of established as well as young up-and-coming authors, and Tarwich town hall has been turned into an interactive exhibition on Shakespeare.

The Manor House, of course, offers something very specifically themed on the Saturday of the festival. As it was the setting of the world famous book "Ann in the Curious Garden" and the sequel "Between the Mirrors", it always has an Ann-themed day during the literature festival. Every artist, no matter what their art be, who wishes to contribute is welcome and put up art or put on a performace in the Manor gardens or the open-to-the-public parts of the house itself. So there is a children's ballet performing in stork costumes, a magician performing themed tricks, there's many artworks ranging from small children's drawings to artful adult paintings hung up in the manor corridors, and much more. And, as every year, the hunt for the dodo is on: Somewhere in the grounds and public areas of the house, a stuffed dodo has been hidden. Whoever finds it will get a free years pass to the zoo.

Spring term holiday may have ended Monday, however, waiting to come off of a short week is not so bad either when it comes to finding a time during which all of her friends would be available. Especially when that patience allows for a little time to regain a taste for sweets after Easter!

On the Thursday after the holiday, Ornella turned eleven years old officially. After school, she had hurried home to enjoy a quiet familial celebration of her birthday with a favorite dinner and gifts. Nothing too exciting, but certainly satisfactory for a school night.

The weekend is when the real fun starts.

In the afternoon on Saturday after a morning of preparation, Nel has her birthday party consisting of friends mostly her age from class. She had designed the theme of a water dwellers party - inclusive of merfolk and swamp creatures. All attendants are given a headband with paper fins sticking out on the sides, and paper fins to stick on their feet. The difference of the merfolk and swamp creatures comes from the personal touches. Merfolk are painted with glitter makeup and add paper sea shells to their headbands, while swamp creatures are facepainted and draped with a few green streamers. Blue plastic table covers serve to control mess and designate the 'water' zones for games. Fingerpainting of course is included, but other games occupy plenty of time. Especially karaoke, in honor of sirens. Snacks are kept simple as well with green jello swamp muck and wafer cookie clams with frosting holding them together half open with a sugar pearl. All of it goes over well, and those few hours pass smoothly with the indoor party kept under control.

After her younger guests have all departed, Nel lends a hand in the clean up in order to ready the house for a second gathering. Earlier in the week, her Mum had extended an invitation on the Network for the Numbered to come over for dinner. A chance to spend time together on Nel’s birthday celebration, and even meet her wife, Janice. No gifts necessary, but strongly encouraged. To anyone that wants to bring a present but is at a loss what would be suitable, Mary Ann has a list of ideas at the ready.

As other Numbered arrive in the early evening, Nel is there at the door to greet them with a bright smile, glitter lingering on her skin at her cheeks and eyes despite efforts to wash it off. The tween is dressed in a maxi romper with a teal floral print and has had assistance in wrangling her hair with a complex braid to hold the front back with the rest. Each one is welcomed into the house and offered an open seat in the living room to sit and talk until the dinner is ready. Not that anyone will be left waiting long before they are invited into the kitchen to dish up plates and return to the living room to sit.

Easter Sunday starts perfectly normal, and promises to stay so - a welcome relief from all the weirdness of the last few months.

Well.

Unless you own chicken or bunnies.

Because as it so happens, if you own one, you will now find yourself with an equal amount of the other. Children who keep a bunny wake up to a chicken having replaced it inside the cage, picking around with some confusion (not that it is hard to confuse chicken). Farmers who keep chicken will find a bunch of bunnies of varying sizes in the coops.

And out and about, wherever normally bunnies would be destroying lawns and more by burrowing into it, there are young chicks milling around, for the most part very surprised by encountering sun and lawn and fields.

It is Mother's Day, the temperatures are summery (the forecast promises a high of 19 degree), the sun is shining almost relentlessly, birds are singing, a mild sea breeze blows...

And all across the echo boundary, people are waking up on this beautiful Sunday. Probably an hour later than normal, unless they have to go to work, since daylight savings happened. Ew. They open their eyes, and it smells of flowers and tea and baked beans...

And something sits over their lap. Or butt, or hip, if they aren't back sleepers.

This something turns out to be a tray on which sit:

Don't sit up too quickly in shock, the tea is really quite hot.

Now, whom does this happen to?

Well. Literally everyone who is more or less human. And yes, that includes three day old babies, eighty year old men, teenage boys, people in hospitals... everyone, really. And among the scents of flowers, food and beauty products, those with the right abilities will be able to scent someone familiar.

It starts slowly, one by one: Items are being returned to people. Specifically, they are delivered to their mailboxes.

The items are very varied, and either pushed through the letter slot in the door or, if they're too big, just left on the doorstep: A wallet that was stolen last year, a coin that was dropped into the sea last week, or a toy that was left on a bus, a time capsule buried in the ground, an unwanted present purposefully forgotten at the train station. The only thing that they have in common that they are never perishables. It's all non-food items.

All items that are being returned must have vanished within the Mossgate Echo Boundary, but they can have vanished long before the person whom they are returned to gained their first echo/got access to the network.

They appear throughout the week, and then abruptly stop the evening before Mother's Day.

Sunday afternoons are the perfect time for visiting family. Church happened in the morning (on the days he actually goes), everyone is usually home for the afternoon before the school-and-or-work-week, and they always make him dinner. Or, well, they make dinner and make sure they include enough for him. It's a lazy day, so nobody really expect much of anybody else, which means they don't expect much of him, either. Since Sundays he rarely feels like doing much anyway, that suits him just fine.

So Sam is sitting in the kitchen playing solitaire at the table while Janice and Mary work on dinner and Nel draws-- when Janice complains about being out of basil.

He considers a moment whether he feels like getting up to go drive to the store for her or not, before he replies, or if he should make Feste or Mary Ann do it.
