It starts slowly, one by one: Items are being returned to people. Specifically, they are delivered to their mailboxes.

The items are very varied, and either pushed through the letter slot in the door or, if they're too big, just left on the doorstep: A wallet that was stolen last year, a coin that was dropped into the sea last week, or a toy that was left on a bus, a time capsule buried in the ground, an unwanted present purposefully forgotten at the train station. The only thing that they have in common that they are never perishables. It's all non-food items.

All items that are being returned must have vanished within the Mossgate Echo Boundary, but they can have vanished long before the person whom they are returned to gained their first echo/got access to the network.

They appear throughout the week, and then abruptly stop the evening before Mother's Day.

We keep getting onsies that may or may not have lived in this household once.

[She doesn't really remember every single piece of children's clothing that were ever put on her children.]

So its not just me. I'm not sure whether that is reassuring or worrying.

It's like a more individualised version of the coal we got for Christmas.

But maybe a little more useful. I think I'm stocked for pens and pencils for a while now.

...And you're certain that they are the exact pens and pencils that you lost?

I'll say mostly certain. The notebooks are definitely mine. The pens and pencils look like mine, and some of them were marked with my initials. [They'd been a gag gift from some of his siblings the year before. ]

Hm.

...At last the initials would give some clue as how to the returner might have found you. If it is really a person who is returning all of this. [For all they know it could be some weird ...power, like the echoes.]

Except there have to be tons of people with JBD as initials. It isn't like James is a rare name.

It is more than nothing.

[There's a shrug audible in her voice.]

So much has been returned that had nothing at all that could be used for identification on them.

There has to be some kind of trick to it.

Perhaps some kind of signature, like an especially long-lasting scent?

I echoed something... well, it would be useless for this, but among other things it shows me things that I would never notice with my normal senses.

After what I experienced with the last echo, I can't say that's impossible.

[She chuckles.]

At this rate I feel like in the not too far future, we will consider nothing impossible any more.
