Thanks, Sadie [Mingle]

Date: 24th of February
Characters: OPEN!

After the earthquake on the 19th of January, the ground had been quiet. Or that was at least what everyone assumed; those who went to the meeting and listened to Walter speak might know that that was not exactly the case. Starting on the 9th of February, the earth had started to be shaken by the tiniest of tremors again, too small to be noticed by the everyday citizen, but not too small to escape seismic readers. Not that the public was told about this; why cause a panic? Things were strange enough these days in Mossgate Council.

Then, around 5am on the 24th, there is the most gentle shaking of the earth, only just strong enough to shake the leaves of some room plants, but noticeable. No damage is caused this time. At least not by the earthquake.

Because shortly after, a wave rolls towards the coastline of Mossgate. And not just any wave. It's a small tsunami wave, measuring about 1 metre at the top when it hits the shore and pressing up into the mouth of the river to reach a maximum height of 1.3m before it ebbs away.

The damage this time is substantial. Cars have been flushed into others, storefronts are shattered, the ground floors or many houses flooded and gardens torn apart. Some of the boats from the harbour sit somewhere inside the town now, and a ferry has crashed into the harbour office. By virtue of the very early hour and massive luck, there are barely any casualties - no more than one would expect from a major storm or flooding.

But Mossgate and Tarwich are in shock, and the descending media certainly don't help.

And every single Numbered in the echo boundary has received a plot echo, granted about a few minutes before the wave hit the shore.

It might have been a bad plan to go out to the waterfront when he still hadn't gotten a decent handle on whatever this weird echo had done to him. He kept getting distracted by something else he just had to notice, and half the time he had to turn to see it, since it didn't seem to matter whether the thing was in his peripheral vision or not.

This lead to him getting in the way of other people more often then not. Which had lead to the unpleasant discovery that it wasn't just objects. After the third time trying to apologize for standing in the wrong spot had lead to his paying attention to the state of people's shoes and the patina of their wedding rings, Jimmy was about ready to give up.

Amidst all those distractions, a very forceful hand vies for his attention. The gloved hand comes under his arm immediately below the shoulder to grab firmly and half lift him off his feet as he is pulled to one side and right into Benjiro. Second hand placed more gently on top of his shoulder, Benjiro winces as the wooden plank once attached to a pier comes down where Jimmy had been standing. Others working on the problem of the scattered wood are given a wave to signal everything is fine.

Benjiro looks to Jimmy with an apologetic frown as he releases his grip on him entirely, “Sorry, that was probably a bit rough. Are you okay?” He had been watching the Network off and on through the morning, so he has some notion of why Jimmy did not see the danger for himself.

Jimmy twists around to see who it who'd pulled him out of the way, and relaxes as he recognizes him.

"Thanks," he manages. "I completely missed that. And I'm fine."

Unspoken as it may be, Benjiro does not look convinced by the slight furrowing of his brow. At the very least, Jimmy is not attending his surroundings wide enough to be so deep into the areas damaged by the meter-tall tsunami. Nodding his head to the side as an indication of which direction, he turns to start walking inland more, “Here, come on. Let’s move to where no one is working.”

Benjiro starts along the street, looking to make certain Jimmy is coming with him as he shuffles his gloves off his hands to stow into a pocket. Along the way, Jimmy may notice fresh nicks in Benjiro’s dirty clothing from the work he’s been involved with so far. Once they get a fair distance from the current area of focus, he slows his pace to talk, “You seem really distracted.” An understatement perhaps.

Jimmy follows after him, although he is still distracted. His gaze constantly flicks around the area, picking up tiny details in the buildings and people's appearances.

As they finally slow down and the question gets asked, Jimmy can only wince.

"Yeah... I thought I had this under control enough that I could come down and help. But I'm starting to think I was being far too optimistic."

A thoughtful hum emits from his throat as Benjiro considers. If Jimmy wants to help, then he should certainly be encouraged to pitch into the efforts. How he helps may be the key.

"What if, instead of doing the heavy lifting work, you help people assess the damage? A lot of homes and stores were hit, and they will need to be thorough in reports to get full insurance coverage. It's hard to be careful when it's so overwhelming," he suggests as he thinks of some of the older folks affected by the tsunami in particular.

"I could do that," he says. He hoped he could, anyway. Maybe he was being optimistic, but it sounded like something he could manage,

It certainly seems like he could make use of his new Echo with the task from what he heard on the Network. He smiles a little, “I know some of the people hit would appreciate a fresh set of eyes for it.”

“Since the tsunami didn’t sustain long, simply because it was too small to move very far inland, the water exposure damage may be manageable to a degree,” he muses. The force of the water is a separate matter, but electronics are the most at risk. With proper drying and careful humidity management, those hit may not have to fight mold in the near future as a consequence of the disaster.

"Then I'll give it a try," he says with determination. If there was a job he could do here that would help, he was all for it.
