From Junktown to Around Town [Open Log]
Date: October 10th through the end of the month
Characters: Benjiro and Sadie, then Benjiro and anyone!
[Closed to Sadie]
End of the school day, Benjiro walked out with Sadie to catch a ride he had requested from a taxi service to pick them up and head to their destination. He had not initially planned to drag Sadie along on the excursion, but while continuing to heal from the fight, she had made it clear he would not be going to the junkyard alone. So rather than wait to finish healing, Benjiro had asked her to come with him to find parts for a new project. His mind has been busier than ever before with new ideas constantly springing to mind for machines he might be able to build, but one such idea has stubbornly stuck, and the more he had considered it, the more sense it made to proceed.
One can only rely on public transport for so much before it becomes more practical to have a personal vehicle; or more specifically, a motorcycle that would far surpass industry standards.
Now he would not be able to transport the parts home on his own, but that he had worked out with the junkyard owner ahead of time, and agreed to pay a flat fee to transport whatever he could fit into a trailer hooked up to an old pickup trunk used by the compound. That delivery would happen tomorrow, meaning they have the remainder of the day to find said parts.
So when they arrive, he stops by the office to let them know he had arrived, and both he and Sadie are let inside the gate to the scrapyard. Inside, a few dogs are ready to greet them with tails wagging. Gate people are good people, or so assures the man on duty. Anyone that comes in through the gate shouldn’t get any hassle from the pack. After that, the man points out the trailer parked near the front, and heads back to the office. A man has his soaps to keep up with, and commercials only last so long.
Left to their own devices, Benjiro stands with Sadie as he absently rubs the top of one dog’s head that is eager for attention. There is a lot of raw metal resource here, and every part he can spot sparks a thought towards what it could be used to create. He has a number of ideal components in mind, but he’ll make do with what he can find and salvage from beneath the grime of weathering.
“This…might take a while.”
[OPEN]
Throughout the remainder of the month, Benjiro will dedicate every spare moment he has to the building of a motorcycle that runs cleaner, goes faster, and has balance assistance built into the onboard computer. When he’s building, he can be found in the storage shed on his great aunts’ property when the weather is poor, or out on the driveway for bigger portions of the assembly when the weather permits.
His phone is kept with him while he works, so he’s available for texts and phone calls whenever.
((OOC: Over the next few weeks he’ll be working at this, so depending on when your character drops by or contacts him, he’ll have less or more work done on it.))

Since it's not like Walter could help him study for all the sorts of tests Ben would need to take...
no subject
Besides, it could be really fun.
no subject
"I think, for me, time isn't so much of an issue anymore," he admits.
"Or, the issue."
That, and riding really is fun.

The keyboard has, too, but the check-in on how that's been progressing has happened well before today.
"And it's not as if I'm just letting time pass, either."
no subject
That Walter needed to pick up a skill that takes most years if not decades to master to bide his time in order to have some relief is not a comforting thought. His recent report that the keyboard he built specifically for Walter has been successful is something if only a boon to his patience.
“So you aren’t sleeping more?” he asks more directly at the idea of Walter trying to pass time.
no subject
It's not supposed to be about him...
"I do still sleep, but it takes less time to get through a cycle once I am asleep."
That doesn't mean he always feels less tired afterward, however.
no subject
After, he moves to crouch down to look at the next part for his build, turning it over in his hands, "You know, if you think there's some other adaptive device I could make like the keyboard, I would be happy to design and build it for you. Birthday or not."

Nightmares still happen - but who of any of the Numbered doesn't have any reason to have nightmares these days?
The seeming shift in focus back to the motorcycle project takes some pressure off Walter's shoulders.
"And I'll contact you whenever I next think of one," he replies. For now, though, most of the concerns he has concern the biological side of things, and that might not be something Ben wants to get into...
"Because you're a good friend, and I trust you."
Kneeling to be on the same level as Ben - as well as get a different angle of view on the motorcycle - he lets one hand drift over the other's wrist.
"I'd have asked for a vocalizer," he admits, "but we practically all have those already these days."
no subject
The compliment pulls his attention back to his friend, and Walter can watch the faint tinge of red rise in the skin over his cheekbones as the boy glances down shyly with a humble smile, "...thank you. I trust you, too." He has come to rely on Walter in order to manage this chaos with the Numbers, but more so, as his close friend.
At the touch to his wrist, he looks back to Walter directly, and he finds himself puzzled by the potential request, "There are, but they aren't available on all devices. What did you have in mind for a vocalizer? Text to speech I'm assuming."
no subject
"More 'speech to speech'."
I worked hard to achieve this voice, and I'm worried I'm going to lose it. The statement sounds somewhat silly in his own head, when made coherent.

“My hands could use a break, so as long as your throat and sinuses feel clear, we can do the audio recordings now. English and Japanese if you’d like. We have to capture all the phonemes and allophones, and from there it’s a matter of pairing them for pronounciation. We can do some sentences and alternate pronounciations of words for comparison. That would be plenty to make a simple version. If you want it to sound precisely like you, we’d need to record more samples and tie in pitch and speed controls, but that’s still manageable.”
no subject
"I'd be very glad for that... thank you, Ben."
You're just proving that you're a good friend, here. ;;
"Might go through as much of the rest of the IPA catalog as possible, too, to be thorough."
no subject
His grin softens to a warm smile at the expression of appreciation, and he stands up to his feet. Waiting for Walter to also stand, he'll start to walk towards the front door of the house with his friend and considers the sheer volume of sound files necessary to capture the IPA catalog, "That will take some time to go through, but you're welcome to borrow my mic to do it at home in parts. If you can give me the basics to start, I can see about pairing them to the samples for a basic build."
Reaching the door, he grasps the handle but speaks before opening it, "The challenge will be in creating a device that can work in face to face conversations."
All right to handwave the actual recording session?
As long as they use the same program, that should work.
"Live voiceover, yes."
YES
Benjiro opens the door to step inside with Walter, “I have a couple thoughts as to how I might be able to make it work…” Notions mostly, he’ll have to sit down and work on the designs on paper to really get a good handle on which to pursue. For the moment, sound capture is the highest priority.
After alerting his great aunts that Walter has come in for a visit, they head upstairs with an open invitation to Walter to stay for dinner a bit later. Once in his room with the door shut to block out ambient noises, he looks up a guide for each language in sample sentences that utilize each phoneme. From there, they get to work at his computer with Walter set up with the microphone standing where his voice can be clearest.
It takes time to run through all the components including Walter providing samples of the range of his voice in pitch and speed, but within an hour, they have covered the necessary pieces for both English and Japanese.
Sliding his headphones off to set on the desk, Benjiro leans back in his computer chair as the last file saves, “That should do it for now. Once you go through the catalog, I can incorporate those pieces.”
Saving the two of us many headaches. X3 (And yes, I meant files, not programs)
"I'll have those done within the day."
He makes a wry expression as he looks towards Ben.
"Unless you're okay with me spending most of the night on them?"
He'd certainly like to, but he can't let his own excitement be an excuse not to sleep...
Whoops XD
The possible advancement of the other files from tomorrow to tonight is met with a soft chuckle as he reminds Walter of his own limits with an apologetic smile, "I won't be able to do much with them for a few days at least. Between school, streaming, and working on my motorcycle, it's going to take time to program, and even longer for me to come up with the right interface."
My muse is likely laughing at me again...
They are human... at this stage, anyway. Life happens, and they're still a part of it.
"That means you'd better sleep well, too," he points out, smile just a little teasing.
It happens
Standing from the desk with a nod, a twist of his smile turns it to a near smirk as Walter tries to tease about sleep, “Pfft! Sleep is for the weak.” By now, he has nearly healed entirely from the fight at school, so he does not need to be quite as responsible about monitoring his schedule and hours.
Benjiro walks from behind his desk to head for the door of his room, “So, you are staying for dinner or shall I get you back out and on your way with an empty stomach?”
If he were real, I can only hope he would find my tags entertaining.
"Oh, I'll stay - I'd dread to think how your aunts would feel if I turned you all down this time!"
He winks, letting on at least a little that it's because he genuinely enjoys spending time with them all, too.
Re: If he were real, I can only hope he would find my tags entertaining.
Starting to head downstairs, he hears the sound of his great aunt in the kitchen getting the meal underway, if only distantly, "I better go pick up my toys. I might have a little more time later but I've got some work to do on the computer as well." Aside from his stream work, he does want to get started on the coding for Walter sooner rather than later.
no subject
"Getting an early start, then? ... I'll be good," he adds belatedly, holding his hands up as a show of innocence.
"I should at least offer to help."
Time to wrap up...?
Heading on down the steps, he encourages the idea, “Aunt Rosemary will appreciate it. I’ll come join you as soon as everything is put away.” Lingering only long enough to make sure Walter is headed for the kitchen, he’ll step outside to put away his project and tools.
Sounds good!
"Don't expect me to stall for you, then."
And down the stairs he goes.
