Half time goes by, suddenly you're wise
Date: October 6th, 2018
Characters: Walter Weekes; anyone who wants to bug the birthday boy!
A year before, and he might not have paid attention to the date on the calendar, with how he tried to keep himself busy.
Oh, he never forgot it; he'd just never asked for anything spectacular as a gift. Close friends either found out the date through casual conversation or ferreted the information out somehow on their own, but his family had never thrown lavish parties and he'd never wanted one.
(Haley had gotten one, once, once she'd chosen her degree back in London. Everyone involved had agreed afterwards to Never Speak of it Again.)
But he found the day special for a separate reason - or perhaps the same one, if people considered "discovering who you were" to be a form of rebirth.
What with what he now knew as a Numbered, though - that this day, six years ago, had been the activation of his first Echo/flashback/remnant of another's memory - it was all the more surreal.
[This is a post for Network communications, threadings for birthday shenanigans at the flat, and one (1) bike run in the evening!]

taking a couple cues from the buddies thread
Sometimes unexpected things happen. Sometimes those unexpected things are rediscovering an actor, realizing how wonderful they are, and spending the entire evening browsing their filmography. That's just part of life.
He did at least remember to leave a congratulatory card and a wrapped gift out on the counter, before shuffling off to his slumber.
But all the lunchtime chatter is enough for him to start stirring, and eventually Russell shuffles out - hair mussed and pajamas on - in search of food and caffeine.
o7 Also not doing hovertext this time. |D
He can also not believe what his flatmate will do to himself, some nights. All-nighters are not desirable events, dammit!
... Alright, so he may have brought the popcorn, but it still doesn't mean the binge was a good idea!
While Russell's gift is far from the most exciting thing of the day (that honor may just go to suddenly knowing all the Japanese words), Walter keeps himself prepped enough to put one of the unused tea packets on once he hears Russell start knocking about.
Still, he can't entirely help himself, and thus engages one joke at his friend's expense:
"束を見逃しています!"
happily plurk chatter gave me the gist, russell can just be confused
Russell slowly blinks a couple of times, then stares at Walter for another moment.
"...Yes?" he finally offers, unsure what he's responding to or if that's a sensible answer, but half-asleep enough not to want to admit it.
Maybe tea will fix this.
Just like the rest of us, at 95% of life!
"Glad that you admit it," Walter says, then gestures back towards the kettle.
"Go on, reboot your system."
... Not that he's entirely sure why he said that.
#relatable
Russell goes by rote through a routine of pouring himself a cup and adding whatever he adds, grabbing something to eat with it, and settling in a chair. It takes the time for him to have a sip or two before his brain catches up enough to ask a follow-up question.
"...What did I just admit to?"
no subject
After a half-minute or so, he stops himself, taking some deep breaths.
"Just to missing a lot, actually. Have you ever heard Japanese before?"
It's a genuine question, though the grin still on his face probably isn't helping any.
no subject
"Oh, is that all. I've seen an anime or two before, yes."
Probably more than that, through various circumstances, but there's no abrupt comprehension of the language rushing over him.
no subject
Because Ben is, after a fashion, one of Russell's relatives; if the man's been out of the country, Walter really should know by this point!
no subject
Benjiro's occasional comments aren't nearly enough to match up to taking a course in it, and Russell never visited that branch of the family abroad. If it weren't for Agatha and Rosemary being nearby and sharing interests with Russell, he likely wouldn't have become close to Ben in the first place.

He'll keep his mouth shut for the next minute or two, let Russell have that sink in - along with having some of his coffee, which could only help.

Though, given some of Walter's other circumstances, maybe the computer thing isn't such a joke. And accessing a mysterious network that can be accessed through any medium, so long as it's one of them, would make a lot more sense if their world was a computer simulation...
Russell pointedly doesn't dwell on the question, for the sake of not bringing that at an inopportune time. And finally notices Walter's serious quiet in sipping that coffee.
"...You're serious?"
Making our characters doubt the nature of their existence is the name of the game! =D
The notion of their whole world being a simulation, though, is one he'd reject outright, if only for peace of mind.
"100 percent."
Go on, Russell; ask him to say something in Japanese.
yay!.....??
It's a slight obstacle to proving Walter's claims, unless they call up Benjiro, or reference some online translation system. With that thought, Russell pulls his phone out again, and starts clicking through to somewhere he can get Walter to show him translations. He swipes out some sentences, taps the translate button, and looks up.
"Okay, tell me 'Nevermind, Russell, you didn't agree to anything - I was joking with you.'"
:VV The hovertext-that-won't cooperate is "[Rasseru], nevermind, you didn't agree to anything."
It's a striking thought, but he sets it aside for now to actually answer Russell's request.
"ラッセル, 気にしないで, 何に同意しませんでした; 私はあなたと冗談を言いました"
no subject
"Well. Uh. And you never knew it before?"
The explanation hovers as an open secret in the air before them; this is another of those changes, like the teeth and the bones and all that, isn't it?
no subject
Which means yes, Russell, this is one of those changes. Less physical, mind, but no less present.
no subject
Russell considers the mostly-empty tea cup in his hand, swirls it around and considers the reflections. There's a lot of opportunities that open a little wider with knowing extra languages, and he's never had the head for it. He offers a crooked smile.
"Can I sign up for those memories, instead of monster tea parties?"
no subject
Walter huffs lightly - then smiles.
"In the meantime, if you ever want to pick it up the hard way, I'll help you practice."
no subject
After another sip at his tea, Russell rolls his eyes and elaborates beyond just the complaining groan.
"I have enough to practice. Have you heard this rumor, Pinewood's looking for extras in a few weeks? I'm thinking - what if film is the break I need?"
no subject
"I have no way of knowing, so, you might as well?"
Just don't expect to drag him along.
no subject
"Oh, never mind. I know you know (almost) nothing of the arts... I'll ask someone else."
Don't worry, he expects someone else will drag Walter along. The player has skimmed that log and the meta-knowledge is leaking.
Rolling, rolling, rolling... also LOL meta.
Or rather, he hopes that covers it.
;)
He checks the kettle, goes about the process for getting more tea started.
"Is it a sketchbook of her sketches, or one for yours?"
... Now I have to figure out what he said. |D
"It's one for me to draw in, you-"
The next word that comes out is very clearly a Japanese one. There's an even chance as to whether it's a swearword, though.
russell might ask later, but not right this moment
Under the mocking banter, there's a hint of concern.
"But, uh, are you already doing that by accident, then?
