Thanks, Sadie [Mingle]

Date: 24th of February
Characters: OPEN!

After the earthquake on the 19th of January, the ground had been quiet. Or that was at least what everyone assumed; those who went to the meeting and listened to Walter speak might know that that was not exactly the case. Starting on the 9th of February, the earth had started to be shaken by the tiniest of tremors again, too small to be noticed by the everyday citizen, but not too small to escape seismic readers. Not that the public was told about this; why cause a panic? Things were strange enough these days in Mossgate Council.

Then, around 5am on the 24th, there is the most gentle shaking of the earth, only just strong enough to shake the leaves of some room plants, but noticeable. No damage is caused this time. At least not by the earthquake.

Because shortly after, a wave rolls towards the coastline of Mossgate. And not just any wave. It's a small tsunami wave, measuring about 1 metre at the top when it hits the shore and pressing up into the mouth of the river to reach a maximum height of 1.3m before it ebbs away.

The damage this time is substantial. Cars have been flushed into others, storefronts are shattered, the ground floors or many houses flooded and gardens torn apart. Some of the boats from the harbour sit somewhere inside the town now, and a ferry has crashed into the harbour office. By virtue of the very early hour and massive luck, there are barely any casualties - no more than one would expect from a major storm or flooding.

But Mossgate and Tarwich are in shock, and the descending media certainly don't help.

And every single Numbered in the echo boundary has received a plot echo, granted about a few minutes before the wave hit the shore.

Maybe they just have too much good sense to encounter it.

[His heart is clearly not into this problem, though.

Quite a lot of other major things have happened since he's returned to the boundary. Pesto is the least of his concerns at the moment.]
channingchanningchanning: (We can discard your little opinion.)

...He's going to run shorter distances then? Wait every few metres? Yes, that's what he's going to do.

.............Actually no, what he's going to is back and circle around Sam all high and mighty, look I'm faster than you, before running ahead again. At least Sam is definitely not going to lose him like this?

It's at least not a long distance before they can see the ferry harbour. Where, indeed, a boat is stuck on a house. Or at least slammed into it, and is now stuck on the area that is normally a car parking area like a stranded whale.

Did you at least have fun?

[ He owns a store. This is an exercise in worry over how messed up it is right now. But also, he's getting ready to go help because he used to be a doctor. ]

I'm fine. I got a memory, I think? I'm pretty sure. ...It was incredibly bizarre.

[ This is. A thing. ]

You're not just thinking about the pesto though, are you.

[It's not quite a question?]

I did, too.

It just wasn't the only thing.

Bizarre how?

...I was walking through these ruins. And I stumbled on this corpse of a girl. She was in pieces--I think from an explosion? And then I did something with my hands. I like... I reached into her, but there was no blood. Like I went through her, and I pulled something out, then put it in a stuffed red cat, and then wandered off.

[ A quiet moment. ]

...I think I moved her soul, given what I remember.

[For five seconds - though more like five minutes, from Walter's perspective and no doubt due a little to the shock - there is only silence.]

What. Could you even see what you pulled out, or did the person in your memory just seem to... know?

[personal profile] twirighted 2019-02-28 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
A bit of both? I pulled out a weird, glowy thing that was... Not exactly an orb but not exactly not an orb? I'm not sure I can explain it. I might draw it later.

[ A comic of the whole memory. He draws dolls, this would just be a comic. ]

“I missed the initial rush, but that sounds rough,” he replies, expression marked by a sympathetic grimace at the list of troubles accrued for medical personnel. The damage to medical supplies, especially medicines that people rely on daily to maintain their health, could impose a heavy burden on the system in the days to come as well. He does not understand her added comment however, and inquires curiously, “What would make it worse if it had happened two months?”

Asked about his own personal effort, he nods once in confirmation then shrugs his shoulders, “I visited Sadie right after everyone was hit, and once I made sure she’d be okay, I came out to help. Pitching in anywhere that I can. I’m not tired and I won’t be for a while.” Well, not so tired he cannot work at least despite his short respite last night.

“If you know of any areas that need more hands, I’ll be done here soon.”

The glance isn't quite in the right direction, and Walter's not quite blinking right, and it's not exactly clear what's going on - but the first impressions aren't good.

"Can I... Uh, sure, sure, I'll look at it."

Russell heads for the laptop, dragging a finger until the screen lights up. There's a few tabs, and the open one's to some news outlet with the weather lookout in the sidebar.

"Just the news - Are you having trouble seeing, then? Sadie's sprouted ears, and..."

[So long as nothing too odd is divulged in text or in a phone call, it should be relatively safe. For instance, this conversation has no context for anyone without a Number.]

Okay. I’ll be heading there in a few minutes.

If anything changes, I can always come by afterwards.

Drawing should help.

[Not just for the 'sharing with other people' aspect, either - even with Walter's now-perfect memory, getting a concept out can help a hell of a lot.]

I suppose in comparison, mine was less boggling; just points and lines, suspended on a background that looked nothing like anything on Earth.

[And then there's the 'also they're websites/weblinks and I can see them now' aspect.]

"I'm not seeing what's on the screen."

Again, he makes himself breathe.

"I think I'm seeing the raw code."

Text, binary, hexadecimal...

[The same way Nel can make or grow plants and Sky can 'see' life force, presumably.]

Better than letting it sit, and only letting the confusion fester.

[Is he focusing on this subject so he won't freak out about the house? Probably.]

[The restaurant family had gone out by ferry, and probably took it back in. He doesn't remember how much of the details they mentioned, it's far too early in the morning, but he understands that key point.]

The ferry crashed... at the same time as all this happened? What...

[There had been a crash of glass and water earlier, as though one of the neighbors had a hose break a window. But the sounds outside are getting louder, and maybe that's not what it was.]

Sorry, sorry, ask someone else for help, I have to. Go.

i'm rearranging russell's timeline, he's going to react to chad... during this thread? sometime

"So, if I move the cursor around..."

Russell clicks on a link, bringing up an article about the strange weather in the region lately, and stands between Walter and the laptop.

"You see that?"

This sounds a little bit like some action movie, a decade or two ago. Black screen, moving green text, the world was a computer simulation...

"What... are you seeing on me?"

Because if Walter's seeing Russell as a shape in the code, he doesn't know what he's going to do. Scream, maybe.

For a moment-

A single, solitary moment…

Benjiro had every intention of punching the naked man positioned on top of his crying girlfriend.

He had been close enough while working to hear the yelling of her name, and hurried over from the next street through an alleyway, bringing him out onto the same street in time to see the man on her. Shock held him long enough to hear the familiar name from the Network, and the anger fizzles as a gut-dropping dread takes over his thoughts. Chad is up and off of her before he can reach them and already trying to approach another person that is rightfully disturbed by the scene. A person that may very well call for the authorities.

Swallowing back his desire to tend to Sadie first, he veers after Chad instead and slows as he comes up to the former canine and the stranger. Hands held up in a placating manner, he lies straight through his teeth with an apologetic expression at his eyes above his facemask as he addresses the stranger first, “I am so, so sorry! He’s a neighbor, and I’ve been trying to help his family watch him since they got hit this morning, but he slipped away. Brain injury and all. Doesn’t do well when he’s stressed.” Then turning to Chad with a friendly tone, he undoes the buttons of his overshirt as he talks, “Chad. Hey, come on, it’s going to be okay. Sadie will stop crying if we talk soft and get something on, okay? I promise.” Chad may very well smell Sadie’s scent still on him under the grime he has been collecting while working, but certainly his scent is still on Sadie from their morning time spent curled up together.
